Team vs Solo Project

Newcomers in games development have first major dilemma about whether to work with someone else or to try to do everything alone.

Solo project is suitable for smaller projects, for simple game play games and for not so demanding graphic games. It is all about what you want to achieve. Perfect solo project games in ActionScript are logic / puzzle games. They usually include small number of graphic symbols with repetitive usage and few interesting sound effects. Game play and controls are easy to implement in all ActionScript versions. This is also great test for future development and self assessment.

Teams are great for gaining experience, one of most important skill in game development. Splitting all work needed among designers (sounds and graphics), programmers and marketing dudes is dream come true for right people and road to success, but this is often very hard to do.

Good starting point in looking to join some team or to create one with right people are game dev forums like:

Good luck!

Learning from the source

The best method for learning is learning from the source. When it comes to game development with Adobe Flash, than best place should be Adobe, right?. Watch several videos online and read how to make games with Flash from Jiro Ietaka. Article and videos are hosted at Adobe pages here.

User level for this articles is intermediate.

Introducing Page Rank 7

Recently with my Free PR5 links giveaway (http://flanture.blog.com/1982660) I started something good. My intention was to give something back to my precious readers and first thing that came to my mind was back links share.

However, completely randomly I visited Iwebtool and while playing around, I wanted to find out how I am helping to those links on my sidebar. I wanted to check how my blog helps WebAction, so I entered web address of that blog. It struck me when I realized that some of my pages have PR6 and this one page http://flanture.blog.com/1613467 from March 2007 has even PR7!

I suppose this shows that I got something valuable here. If anyone in interested in renting some text link space on my sidebar do email me at flanture [at] gmail [dot] com and we can discuss it. Thanks for your support.

Flanture and Mobile

Recently I got myself new Nokia phone with built in Flash Lite Player and I like it a lot. Transfer of files from PC to mobile is easy as copy and paste, but it is also possible via Bluetooth or IC.

First search of Web for free Flash mobile content took me at Flashstocks, where I downloaded few screensavers and wallpapers. My favorite is Ball Clock. My excitement is increasing every day about Flash Lite and Flash Mobile content, so I decided to read a little about it and learn more. I found "Flash Applications for Mobile Devices" by Richard Leggett, Weyert de Boer and Scott Janousek with 537 pages and I downloaded source code from book's publisher website and now I'm ready to dive into Flash Lite.
At the moment I don't have great expectations, but to learn some new stuff and make few animations or applications for myself.

Emanuele Feronato and his website really rocks. For every Flash Game Developer wannabe this is never ending source of useful informations about making games in Flash. More suitable for beginers, but well explained, code everywhere , samples and stuff.

I wish I could have more free time to explore it more. Nice work Emanuele !

More Easy Money

I wrote earlier about Kongregate flash games community in Easy Money post, but there is much more to tell about this, since this website is rapidly growing project.

There is 765 games online right now, and that number is changing fast. All games are in several categories: Action, Racing, Shooter, Sports, Puzzle and Strategy and More. Everyone can upload his flash game. Players decide about it, they rate it, comment it and so on. Kongregate is founded in 2006 and they want to become "leading online hub for players and game developers".

Few interesting ideas are present. First, while you play and rate games from other developers, those best games, highest rated games in every month are entering Contest and every month $1500 is rewarded. Second highest gets $1000, etc, 9th gets $250. That's not all. Weekly prize is $250 for first place, $150 for second and third. Not bad at all.

But wait, there is even more. While playing games, some games can get you cards. I got 2 cards for now, Ubuntu, the Elder and Juju, the Shaman. For those I had to play 4 different games, reach some levels and stuff. Cards will be used in game that is still in development, and that will be available on Kongregate when it is finished. I can imagine that this game will also have some heavy cash prizes.

Come and try it. I just wanted to see how is it and now I'm really hooked. What can I do? Some things are stronger than me :)

Easy Money

I'm level1 kongregater and I have 25 points. It wasn't easy. First I had to sign up. Then, I had to play some not so good flash games. But I did it! I rated 2 games and I got 5 points for each. That's 25.

Website is kongregate.com and it's all about playing, making, rating flash games. Whole community of raters and kongregaters. If you upload your game you got 75 points. If you have your game featured you got 50 points. More points higher level. So? Well, they say : Soon, you'll be able to redeem your points for prizes ! What? For 1.000 points i become invisible magic rater? Great.

Gone to collect more powerful points. See you there.
